Largest Class in History of Local School Receive Diplomas
The
picnic Friday closed the year for the Sunfield School, district No. 2. The
commencement exercises were held Thursday evening, May 26, 1938, with an
attendance that more than filled the 450 seats provided. There were 21
graduates this year, the largest class in the history of the local school. The
seniors accompanied by their teachers, school board and speaker, were escorted
to the auditorium stage by the juniors, with Mrs. Melvin Buchner at the Piano.
The program was as follows:
Invocation -- Rev. J. Grimes
Glee Club (one selection) -- A. R. Wright
Welcome by the President -- John Harkness
Class History -- Violet Cheal
Class Will -- Idah Reahm
Class Prophecy -- Virginia Root
Class Song -- Senior Sextelle
Class Grumbler -- Allan Lippincott
Giftatory -- Phillip Grimes
Achievement Awards -- A. F. Forche
The highest honor for the girls, Mr. Forche stated, went to Ilah Barnum who was presented with a Honor Student pin and she gave her address on the program as a valedictorian of the class. The next highest was Violet Cheal who gave her address as salutatorian of the class. Charles Coppess received the highest honors for the boys and was presented with a Honor Student pin and he gave a short address. Hilda Jackson, a junior, received special mention for being neither absent nor tardy during the year. The balance of the program was as follows:

The names of the graduates follows: Ilah Barnum, Violet Cheal, Charles Coppess, Grace Creitz, Clinton Dodge, Irene Franks, Phillip Grimes, John Harkness, Lester Jackson, Shirley Jackson, Pearl Peabody, Glenn Root, Idah Reahm, Marjorie Newth, Byron Van Buren, Esther Van Buren, Franklin Dean, Lawrence Dean, Ardath Smith, Allen Lippincott and Fred Van Antwerp.
In Athletics, Sunfield has won four championship titles as follows: Eaton County league basketball, wining ten games and losing none; district basketball won in Lansing, regional basketball won in Albion, Barry-Eaton County basketball.
